About the town of Tronadora & Lake Arenal
• Tronadora is situated at about 600 m elevation. It lies on the western side of Lake Arenal.
Lake Arenal is an artificial lake (a reservoir) spanning about 85 km², with variable depth depending on seasonal water levels.
• History & Settlement
The original village of Tronadora (and also the older Arenal village) was affected by the reservoir’s creation. In the 1970s, when the dam and reservoir project for Lake Arenal were carried out, the communities were relocated to higher ground.
The “new” Tronadora was planned with infrastructure — schools, church, parks, etc.
• Climate & Weather
Because it sits where inland and Pacific weather patterns converge, the weather is changeable. Tronadora is somewhat cooler and drier than the Pacific coast due to its higher elevation.
